Meet The Makers: Robson

Meet The Makers: Robson

Every light we create also celebrates the crafts mastered by our makers, who we are introducing in our series Meet the Makers. This time, we visit Robson, an expert glass-blower based in our Witney factory, who mouth-blows designs for all our collections.

Silica is melted in a gas-fired furnace at temperatures upwards of 1400°C. Robson gathers the silica sand - a mineral compound - on a blowing iron. He works it by hand into a molten ball, free-blows the ball to half its desired size, before blowing it into a carbon mould for the smooth, shiny surface finish afforded by our unique silica recipe.

Original BTC gained exceptional glass expertise when it aqcuired Britain's last flat glass maker, English Antique Glass, in 2011. Their stained glass panels, which they continue to make in our Witney factory, grace landmarks like York Cathedral and Buckingham Palace. Today, the company also produces many of the glass shades for our lights, including the Globe, Ship's Well and Brompton collections.
