Heritage

Original BTC was founded in 1990 with a commitment to British craftsmanship and design. Since then, we’ve expanded into new markets, opened showrooms around the world, and invested in our UK factories – all while staying true to our roots.

1990 — how it started

Original BTC was founded in 1990 by Peter Bowles in Oxfordshire, still our home today. Breaking convention, Peter was the first designer to use bone china in lighting, paving the way for his pioneering investment in British manufacturing.

A unique figure in the industry, Peter has launched new brands, revived heritage companies and factories, and designed products.

One of Peter's first designs is the Hector Table Light. Demonstrating the natural beauty and capabilities of bone china in lighting, the Hector quickly became an iconic and well-loved design all around the world.

2002 — bone china

The first designer to use bone china for lighting, Peter Bowles' commitment to local manufacturing led him to Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the British ceramics industry.

In 2002, a visit to the factory producing the bone china shades revealed it was under threat of closure. Peter promptly took the business on, including all its staff.

Today, the factory is Original BTC's lifeblood, and we continue to invest in new equipment, most recently a new firing kiln.

2010 — Davey lighting

Looking to expand into outdoor lighting, Original BTC acquired Davey Lighting in 2010, keeping production in the UK and preventing its sale to a Belgian company that planned to move manufacturing overseas.

With roots dating back to the shipyards of nineteenth century London, Davey Lighting combines industrial design, traditional craftsmanship and the finest raw materials.

Authentic and unique, many of the lights are IP-rated and are still made by hand in England. We continue to add new collections to the Davey Lighting range while carefully updating heritage models where necessary so they can continue to be used in contemporary spaces.

2011 — Glass & metal works

Original BTC acquired English Antique Glass, the UK’s last traditional flat glass manufacturer, securing its future and centuries-old craftsmanship. With decades of experience, its artisans have hand-crafted stained glass panes for landmarks like York Cathedral and Buckingham Palace. Today, the factory continues its legacy while producing hand-blown glass lighting for Original BTC.

In the same year, a Birmingham-based metalworks, joined Original BTC, ensuring its specialist craftsmanship remained in the UK. Today located in Oxfordshire, the highly skilled workforce continues to use centuries-old techniques to solder, weld, and shape brass, copper, and aluminium into shades, bases, and components for Original BTC’s lighting collections.

2012 — A family business

As an independent, privately owned business, Original BTC manages all design, manufacturing, and distribution in-house, maintaining full control over quality and craftsmanship.

A true family business, Peter Bowles’ son, Charlie, became Director in 2012 – having gained hands-on experience over the years, from assembling the brand’s iconic Hector collection as a teenager to designing the company’s website and brochure while studying Product Design at university. His first design, the London, launched in 2009.

In 2013, Peter’s daughter, Gina Amies, became Director of Original BTC's sister company Beadlight, followed by her sister, Hettie Bowles, who joined the business in 2017 as Operations and Logistics Director.

2013 — Beadlight

In 2013, Original BTC acquired British LED lighting specialist Beadlight. Founded in Oxford in the 1980s, Beadlight has been at the forefront of this technology since its beginnings, designing, engineering and manufacturing the first LED reading lights for the aerospace industry.

Using their patented “Beadlight diffusion”, the company creates the finest LED illumination to read by. Today, Beadlight works with all the major airlines and seat manufacturers in the airline industry.

2014 — Paris showroom

Expanding into the French market, we opened a showroom at 32 Rue Bonaparte, St Germain. This new space proved to be a great success, bringing our British craftsmanship and design to Paris.

2015 — Queens award

We were honored to receive a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2015, recognizing our outstanding growth in export.

“Winning a Queen’s Award is a huge honour for the entire team - it’s the highest accolade a company can receive in the UK.” — Peter Bowles

2017 — US expansion

Expanding beyond Europe for the first time, we opened a showroom in New York's SoHo at 56 Greene Street. This exciting move introduced British craftsmanship and design to the U.S. market, further growing our global presence.

2020 — Taiwan showrooms

We took our first step into Asia with the opening of a showroom in Taichung, Taiwan’s vibrant second-largest city, showcasing a curated selection of our designs under the leadership of Rick Huang.

Building on this success, we later opened a second showroom in Taipei, bringing our handcrafted lighting to even more customers in the region.

2020 — 30 years of hector

We proudly celebrated 30 years of craftsmanship with the launch of the Hector 30, a special edition of Peter Bowles’ first design that set the tone and standard for Original BTC.

From the start, attention to detail and thoughtful design have been central to our ethos. The Hector introduced the now-iconic woven cotton braid cable, replacing traditional plastic flex for a more refined finish.

Crafted by hand in our Stoke-on-Trent factory, the Hector 30 continues to embody the timeless British craftsmanship and design that Original BTC stands for.

2021 — Oxfordshire investment

With an aim to reduce our environmental impact and improve efficiency, we centralised our glass-blowing operations at our main site in Oxfordshire – home to our head office, assembly line, and Beadlight.

This relocation streamlined management, reduced transport miles, and strengthened our commitment to sustainability.

2024 — Munich opening

Our very first location in Germany opened on Gärtnerplatz in Munich, showcasing a stunning showroom designed in collaboration with #AD100 interior designer Sebastian Zenker.

Working closely with our Director, Charlie Bowles, Sebastian crafted a space that beautifully balanced boldness and calm, reflecting the essence of our brand.

Sustainability

As a family business, we take responsibility for our impact on the world. Our commitment is to design and manufacture timeless lighting in a responsible way, creating products that can be admired for generations.
