Magnus Portable Light
About
The Magnus Portable Light brings the distinctive glasswork of the Magnus collection into a portable design, pairing a mouth-blown opal glass shade with an arched black bronze handle. Inspired by the natural movement of molten glass, the rounded shade has a gently compressed profile and narrow central rib. Made from three layers of glass, it diffuses the warm-white LED light evenly, while its glossy surface gives the light a strong sculptural presence both switched on and off.
Three illumination levels allow the light to be adjusted to suit the setting, from a dining table or terrace to reading beside the bed. IP44-rated for use indoors and outdoors, Magnus sits on a rechargeable black bronze base with a discreet USB-C charging port. A full charge takes approximately 2.5 hours and provides around 7 hours of light at full brightness, 16 hours on the medium setting or 34 hours at its lowest level.
Manufacturing
The Magnus Portable Light’s shade is made by hand at Original BTC’s glassworks in Oxfordshire, using traditional glassmaking techniques. Each piece is built up from three layers of glass: clear glass forms the foundation, a layer of opal glass gives the shade its characteristic opacity and a final clear layer creates its glossy surface.
While molten, the glass is gathered onto a blowing iron, rolled until evenly distributed, then blown and shaped inside a mould to create Magnus’s rounded, subtly compressed profile. Once formed, the shade is separated from the blowing iron and left to cool gradually overnight. The following day, the excess glass is cracked off before holes are drilled and the edges carefully sanded and finished by hand. Small variations are an inherent part of the process, giving each shade its individual character. After a final quality check, the finished glass moves to assembly in Oxfordshire, where it is combined with the black bronze base, handle and other components to complete the light.
