About

Created in collaboration with London design studio Buchanan Studio, the Neotenic lighting collection is inspired by the craft of glassmaking, curved shapes and a touch of Neapolitan nostalgia – making handmade glass the hero. The Neo Pendant Light’s generously rounded, mouth blown shade in opal glass is swirled with Strawberry, Chocolate or Vanilla hues, recalling the nostalgia of Neapolitan ice cream while feeling distinctly contemporary.

Unlit, the glass appears soft and almost opaque. When lit, it glows with depth and movement, casting a warm, atmospheric light over dining tables, kitchen islands or seating areas.  The shade is attached to discreet cables, anchored by a textured white ceiling fitting and finished with a brass cap that subtly signals the collaboration. Each shade emerges from our Oxfordshire with its own swirling pattern and delicate variations, a natural result of the hand-swirled glass that ensures no two lights are ever quite the same. A refined brass cap finishes the design, creating a considered focal point in hallways, bedrooms, or kitchens, depending on placement and specification.

About

Manufacturing

Each Neotenic shade is shaped entirely by hand by our glassblowers in our Oxfordshire glassworks, and a lot of time went into perfecting its proportions and signature swirl. Once the raw batch is melted and gathered on a blowpipe as molten glass, the glassblower forms a bubble, coats it in opal glass and introduces colour using coloured frit before stretching and rolling the hot glass back on itself, creating marble-like ripples and veins.

A final gather is blown into a custom three-part graphite mould to achieve the bullnose form, then released, annealed slowly overnight, and cold worked by hand. The rim is cut, sanded, bevelled and polished, holes are drilled for fittings, and the shade is ready for assembly. Natural variations in the process make every piece one of a kind.

The Collaboration

Neotenic began with an open brief and a tour of Original BTC’s Oxfordshire HQ, where Buchanan Studio co-founder Angus Buchanan and Original BTC Director Charlie Bowles discovered their common passion for British craft and contemporary design. “We were particularly taken by the way the glass transforms when illuminated. It has one character when turned off, and another entirely when glowing,” Angus recalls.

“Together, we’ve produced something unique – a true celebration of UK design and craftsmanship,” says Charlie. Explore the full story behind the collection in our Journal article.
