Why verdigris’ moment has arrived

Our Mast lights can truthfully claim to have the status of a design classic.

Rooted in Britain’s industrial heritage, their clean lines and authentic materiality are why they continue to be chosen to illuminate traditional cottages and modern villas alike.

This season, we introduce Verdigris as a new finish to the Mast collection, unlocking a new side of this timeless light.

Blending vivid turquoise with the earthy tones of bronze, verdigris instantly adds depth to a design. Inspired by the natural ageing process of bronze, which famously led to the Statue of Liberty donning her teal dress, our verdigris hue is created by hand in our Oxfordshire factory.

Our team receives the sand-cast, untreated bronze bodies. These have been made in a partner foundry using a traditional technique, where the molten alloy is poured into sand-filled moulds. Once cooled, each piece is machined, drilled and carefully prepared by hand.

In our metalworks, every fitting is weathered by hand before being immersed in a special solution and left to develop its distinctive green-blue patina over 24 hours.

Guided by skilled experts, the process creates subtle variations in tone and texture, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.

What makes verdigris so enduring is the way it reveals the life of a material rather than concealing it.

Long admired on historic roofs, sculptures and architectural details, the patina brings depth, softness and a sense of permanence that cannot be replicated by a flat coat of paint.

It is also, for all its heritage, surprisingly easy to live with. Verdigris introduces colour without shouting about it, sitting somewhere between a classic metal finish and a painterly accent. Against stone, brick, plaster, timber or limewash, it brings a gentle lift, adding interest without tipping a room into anything too decorative or overdone.

In interiors, that makes it a natural choice for spaces that benefit from a little character: hallways, garden rooms, boot rooms, kitchens and rooms that open onto terraces or courtyards. It has the old-soul quality of something discovered rather than newly installed, which is precisely its charm. Paired with antiques, woven textures and warm neutrals, it feels quietly established. Set against cleaner architecture, it adds a touch of romance and irreverence.

Outside, verdigris comes into its own. On garden walls, beside planting or along a pathway, its green-blue tones sit beautifully with foliage, aged brick and weathered stone. It feels less formal than a traditional dark bronze or black finish, softer than polished metal and rather more intriguing than the usual suspects. A little less serious, perhaps, but no less sophisticated.

As the bronze continues to respond to its environment, the surface will subtly evolve, developing greater richness and complexity over time. The result is a finish that grows more distinctive with age, bringing character, authenticity and a welcome flicker of colour to one of our most enduring designs.
