Meet The Makers: Janice

Meet The Makers: Janice

We continue our Meet the Makers series with a visit to our bone china factory in Stoke-On-Trent. This is where our spongers and fettlers ensure that every single shade we make is finished to perfection before it is glazed and fired. One of these craftspeople is Janice, who's worked all her life with bone china.

Why is sponging and fettling important?

Sponging and fettling are essential steps between casting and firing. During this process, partially dried bone china pieces are smoothed and cleaned using wet sponges and fine knives to remove any irregularities. Spongers and fettlers meticulously inspect each piece, so that the pottery is flawless before it goes into the kiln.
